This Just In: Art Is Good for You!
Neuroplasticity, say that fast 10 times.
Who doesn’t love a good buzz word and for me this sexy scientific one has been drawing my attention.
Neuroplasticity is the brain’s remarkable ability to change and reorganize itself by forming new neural connections and pathways allowing us to adapt, learn and recover throughout our lives. Yes, that's correct; throughout our entire lives. You can teach an old dog new tricks!
Professor Andrew Huberman a neuroscientist at Stanford whose podcast Huberman Lab is one of my current addictions, says play is the portal to neuroplasticity.
Expressive art, the combination of art and play, is not only a means of self-expression but also a powerful tool for nurturing neuroplasticity and promoting longevity. When we create art, whether it's painting, sculpting, or even dancing, our brains undergo a magnificent transformation. The act of artistic expression stimulates multiple neural pathways, fostering the growth of new connections and strengthening existing ones. This intricate dance between creativity and neuroplasticity enriches our cognitive abilities and enhances our brain's adaptability. And it's fun. What a deal!
But wait, there’s more. Artistic pursuits challenge the mind in diverse ways leading to the expansion of cognitive abilities. Problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and attention to detail are honed through the artistic process. Additionally, art encourages experimentation and risk-taking, fostering resilience and adaptability. The continuous learning and improvement involved in creating art also fuels a growth mindset, empowering us to embrace challenges with more confidence and flexibility. And creating art provides a therapeutic outlet for emotions, thoughts, and experiences that may be challenging to express verbally. Painting, drawing, writing, or engaging in any creative endeavor can be a form of self-discovery and catharsis, and reduce stress and anxiety. The immersive nature of artistic expression activates the brain's reward center, releasing dopamine, which enhances feelings of pleasure and satisfaction, something we all want more of in life.
Engaging in Expressive Art practices brings joy, reduces stress, and improves overall mental well-being, factors that contribute to a longer, healthier, happier life. When we explore our artistic side, we are giving ourselves true enjoyment and supporting our well being too.
